The CFA Society of South Florida consists of approximately 300 professionals in a variety of investment professions, including portfolio managers, analysts, trust officers, consultants and pension, endowment and foundation fund executives. The majority of our members have earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) professional designation awarded by the CFA Institute. The membership reflects the diverse nature of the investment profession in the South Florida area. Members are employed by major corporations, associations, unions, national, state and local government agencies, financial regulators, academic institutions, investment managers, insurance companies, broker/dealers and consultants, among others.

The CFA Society of South Florida has two classes of active membership Regular and Affiliate.

Regular Membership:

To quality as a Regular member of CFA Institute and a local society, an investment professional must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or have equivalent education or work experience.
  • Passed Level I of the CFA exam or such other appropriate examination as approved by the Board of Governors AND have 48 months of acceptable professional work experience* in the investment decision-making process,
    or
    Passed the Self-Administered Standards of Professional Practice Examination and have 48 months of acceptable professional work experience in the investment decision-making process.
  • Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute.

Both CFA Institute and a society must agree to accept an applicant as a Regular member. In the event of a discrepancy, CFA Institute makes the final determination for Regular membership status.

Affiliate Membership:

To qualify for Affiliate membership, an applicant must meet BOTH of the following criteria:

  • Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement and Professional Conduct Statement.
  • Fulfill society requirements for Affiliate membership.

Affiliate membership requirements vary by society, and stricter requirements than stated above may be imposed.

Once an applicant is approved for Affiliate membership by a society, the applicant will automatically become an Affiliate member with CFA Institute.

CFA Institute Affiliate members receive the same benefits as Regular members, but do not have voting rights.

Note:

*Acceptable professional work experience is defined as activities which consist primarily of at least one of the following:

  • Evaluating or applying financial, economic, and/or statistical data as part of the investment decision-making process involving securities or similar investments, which include but are not limited to publicly traded and privately placed stocks, bonds, mortgages and their derivatives, commodity-based derivatives, mutual funds, other investment assets, such as real estate and commodities, if these other investment assets are held as part of diversified, securities-oriented investment portfolios.
  • supervising directly or indirectly those who practice such activities.
  • teaching such activities.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution or have equivalent education or work experience; Have attained one or more of the following experiences; Three years of acceptable professional work experience and passage of Level 1 of the CFA program, or such other appropriate examinations as may be approved by the CFA Institute Board of Governors, or Six years of acceptable professional work experience and passage of a self-administered standards of professional practice examinations format established and approved by the CFA Institute Board of Governors.
  • At the time of application, be engaged in acceptable professional work and sign a Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct statement and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute.

CFA Charter holders automatically qualify for Regular membership.

How To Become a CFA South Florida Member:

Individuals interested in joining the CFA Society of South Florida , Inc. are encouraged to join our mailing list now and attend upcoming events. Membership applications and sponsorship forms can be downloaded directly from the CFA Institute website.

Sponsorship requirements for the CFA Society of South Florida are as follows: applicants must obtain one sponsorship from any Regular CFA Society of South Florida member (the sponsor must be from a different firm than the applicant) and a second sponsorship from the applicant's supervisor. The supervisor requirement is waived if the applicant is the principal of the firm, a student, retired, self-employed, unemployed, or if providing a supervisor sponsor places the applicant in a difficult professional position.
